You Probably Missed Ralph Macchio’s Real-Life Daughter, Julia Macchio, in Cobra Kai Season 4

The following story contains light spoilers for the Cobra Kai Season 4 episode “Party Time.”

Not to go all Fast and Furious here, but Cobra Kai is all about family. The show focuses primarily on the lives of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), decades after the events of the original Karate Kid, as their relationships with both their own literal and surrogate families are evolving. Both Johnny and Daniel form meaningful relationships with new young people who could, at times, feel like their kids of sorts, and even themselves tend to have an on-again off-again brotherly relationship. Season 4 of Cobra Kai took that theme a step farther, bringing a real-life familial bond to the screen: Ralph Macchio’s actual daughter, Julia Macchio, played a key role.

A key part of Cobra Kai Season 4—which never really gets totally resolved—is how Daniel and Amanda LaRusso’s son, Anthony, isn’t behaving like the angel they probably think he is. In what turns out to be Anthony’s first major Cobra Kai arc, we see that he and his friends give a new student in his middle school class, Kenny, a hard time. And we mean a really hard time, pranking and humiliating him, eventually leading Kenny to link up with Robby Keene, join Cobra Kai, and learn karate to defend himself. And when Anthony gets in trouble with Kenny at school, this behavior eventually reaches Daniel and Amanda.

That’s where Vanessa LaRusso enters the picture.

Ralph Macchio’s real-life daughter, Julia Macchio, plays Daniel’s cousin Vanessa LaRusso in Cobra Kai Season 4.

About a third into the Season 4 Cobra Kai Episode “Party Time,” Daniel’s cousin Louie LaRusso (played by comedian Bret Ernst and not exactly a trustworthy source!) is trying to convince Daniel that Vanessa, one of Daniel’s cousins who is a grad school student in a year two studying child psychology, could help when it comes to figuring out what went wrong with Anthony and why he’s been misbehaving. Amanda isn’t on board: “No offense, but if we’re gonna get a pro we can do better than Marissa Tomei Jr.”

Louie reluctantly calls Vanessa (played by Julia Macchio) over, and she blows away Daniel and Amanda with her knowledge and advanced terminology about what might be troubling their son. But when she really blows the situation open is after telling the parents that it’s not their son who she wants to analyze, but his parents.

Obviously, an interview scene happens, and it makes for a fun one, these three distinct characters bouncing off each other, all working toward how they can set Anthony straight. But it’s made even more fun knowing that “Cousin Vanessa” is Daniel’s own daughter in real life.

Julia Macchio has worked as an actress before.

Julia, 29, has appeared in a few movies before her cameo alongside her father in Cobra Kai; most recently, she played a role in Polly Draper’s 2018 film Stella’s Last Weekend, and also appeared in the 2012 film Girl Most Likely, which starred Kristen Wiig.

Julia is also active on social media, and wrote a message about her experience in the new season of Cobra Kai.
